Craig Henshaw did not know that when he flew away to backpack through Europe this summer, he was going away from a winning ticket that won the July 8th $21 million Lotto Max jackpot. Henshaw was a Toronto-area school teacher who became one of the latest millionaires in Lotto Max.
She joyfully narrated: “I bought the ticket, stuck it to my fridge with a whole bunch of other tickets, and then forgot about it the whole summer!”
This 42-year old woodshop and technology teacher and his girlfriend had spend the whole of summer travelling and it was not until he came home that he came to realize that he had a lot of tickets to check.
Henshaw went to a local grocery store while he was on his way home from work to check his tickets. He told: “Essentially, I walked around with a $21 million lottery ticket in my pocket all day!”
He went to say that “At first I thought I won $21,000 and was floored. I was so excited. When the OLG person on the phone told me I won $21 million, I actually dropped the phone. I was frozen. I couldn’t believe it. My life is just going to be so great now!”
Being ecstatic that he was, he forgot to bring along the groceries he purchased and immediately went home to share the news with his parents as well as his girlfriend.
“I still can’t believe it!!” he remarked gleefully. “This just doesn’t seem real. All the things that I want to do, such as buy my first home and settle down, are now going to be a possibility.”
Henshaw told that one of the first things he would do is to set up an education fund for his nieces and nephew as well as helping a close-friend with tuition.
He also plans to take his parents to a trip to Europe, where he and his girlfriend went last summer.
He said that he would take a year off from teaching, but will surely return because he could not imagine himself not teaching in the future.
